Realm of the Mad God

A two-person game-jam prototype turned into the browser's most influential permadeath MMO — a bullet-hell shooter where death erases your character entirely, funded on cosmetics alone at launch, and still running fifteen years later as a live game that quietly isn't a Flash game anymore.

Raze

A 2010 Armor Games shooter that bolts an FPS-style mouse-aim-and-credit-shop loop onto 2D platform movement, then tells its story twice — once as the human resistance, once as the alien invasion it's putting down — an unusually structured idea that a repetitive, mirrored second campaign doesn't fully live up to.

Bubble Trouble

A Croatian college student's solo take on Capcom's Super Pang spent 2002 spreading from his own website to Newgrounds and Miniclip, and unlike almost everything else that travelled that route, it never actually died — its own developer rebuilt it in HTML5 years before Flash shut off, and it is still live on major portals today.

Madness Interactive

A 2003 Newgrounds fan game that turned Krinkels' ultraviolent Madness Combat cartoons into a scrappy side-view shooter, then quietly became more famous for its sandbox mode than its campaign — 15.8 million Newgrounds views and a modding scene that outlived the original authors' involvement.

Storm the House 3

The third entry in one developer's own stick-figure siege series adds a 40-day campaign, hireable gunmen and a James Bond-themed cheat menu on top of the click-and-shoot base defense of Storm the House 2 — a competent, sometimes buggy refinement of a formula that never really changes shape, and one with no save button for a three-hour run.

The Last Stand

A 2007 Newgrounds upload built by a first-time Flash coder as a learning exercise, The Last Stand turned a $16,000 Armor Games contest win into a five-game franchise and a 2021 paid Steam remaster — while the original 20-day siege underneath it stays a stiff, repetitive resource-allocation puzzle that mostly matters for what it started.

Boxhead: 2Play

A solo Bullfrog veteran's fourth entry in his own top-down zombie-shooter series added the one feature its title promises — local two-player co-op and deathmatch — to an arsenal of ten weapons across eighteen rooms, and that addition is close to the whole review, because almost everything else about it is the same arena-survival loop the series had already run three times before.

Frantic 2

A free 2009 bullet-hell shmup from the Kongregate developer known only as PolymerRabbit — three episodes, thirty bosses and five customisable ships stacked on top of a genuinely clever "scrape the bullet stream for score" mechanic that the game itself never bothers to explain, wrapped in a bullet-vs-powerup colour clash players were still complaining about a decade and a half later.

Sift Heads World: Act 1

The Canadian studio Pyrozen's March 2010 relaunch of its long-running assassin saga drops three playable bounty hunters into a Chicago-to-Palermo mob war with almost no recap for anyone who hasn't already played five previous games — a point-and-click shooting gallery bolted onto a gun-shop economy that the series had already run once before.

Pico's School

A 1999 point-and-click shooter built in Flash 3, before Newgrounds even had a Portal to host it on — historically the single game most credited with turning Newgrounds into a platform, and mechanically a very thin one even by the standards of its own year.
