Trick Quiz

By Leetdom · 2026

Play:

Touch: tap an answer to choose it; for the dexterity riddles, press and hold the wick, drag the dial, catch the spark, or swipe down to snuff the flame; the pause and mute buttons are top right; one tap retries after a loss or starts again from the win screen · Keyboard: number keys 1 to n pick an answer (and toggle multi-select, then Enter confirms); arrow keys move the dial and perform swipes; Space or Enter holds the wick and catches the spark; P or Esc pauses; Enter or Space retries from the loss and win screens

About:

A compact surreal-logic microchallenge made in-house for Leetdom, in the spirit of the early-2000s trick-quiz games but built entirely from original riddles. You sit before a single living flame in a dark parlor. It asks you fourteen short questions, and each one is a small trap you can see through if you read the wording and watch the picture rather than guessing what it 'should' mean.

Every trick is fair. The answer is always derivable from the words on screen or the visual rules in front of you — never outside trivia you would have to already know. The first riddle asks what colour the words are, not what they say. One tells you a flame bites and that you must keep your hands off it for four seconds, so the move is to do nothing. Others ask you to tap the lit candles, line candles up shortest to tallest, hold a wick until it catches, slide a dial to the number of moths in the jar, catch a loose spark before it fades, or snuff a flame with a downward swipe. A few are plain logic. The surprise is in the framing; the solution is always honest.

You carry three embers. A wrong answer costs one ember, shows a gentle hint, and lets you retry the same riddle immediately — losing all three ends the run and a single tap starts over. Finishing all fourteen lights the win screen with your clear time and best. The whole thing is tuned to be fast to fail and fast to retry, so the fun is in the second and third read.

It plays the same on a phone and on a desktop. Touch is first-class through Pointer Events: tap the answers, hold the wick, drag the dial, swipe to snuff. Keyboard is equally first-class: number keys pick answers, arrows drive the dial and swipes, Space holds and catches, Enter confirms. All of the art, text, sound and code are original and generated in code, with no image or audio files, no network and no third-party libraries.

Phone check: 2026-10-03: real CDP touch on the phone profile (390x844) completed all fourteen riddles to the win screen; a deliberate all-wrong run spent the three embers to the loss screen and a single touch retried; tab-hidden visibilitychange, the HUD pause button and resize/orientationchange all paused and restored cleanly. Desktop 1280x800 keyboard run cleared every riddle (number keys, arrows, Space-hold, Enter-confirm), paused with Esc and resumed, and restarted with localStorage patched to throw on every call with no errors. Landscape 844x390 layout walked through the first nine riddles without clipping. A 131-assertion Node solver test brute-forces the discrete inputs of each riddle and confirms only the intended answer passes. Audio was rendered offline (OfflineAudioContext): full-mix peak -6.2 dBFS, music bed 11.8 dB RMS under the sfx body level, HF energy above 6 kHz 27 dB below the mix, music noise floor -72 dBFS, music is a breathing drone plus a non-repeating pentatonic bell line. No console errors, no page errors and no network requests in any run.
